Lake Michigan Credit Union Announces 2016-17 Hutt Scholarship Essay Contest
GRAND RAPIDS, MI (October 31, 2016) – Established in 1990 by Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU), the annual Lloyd F. Hutt Scholarship essay contest provides local high school seniors with the opportunity to win one of ten $2,000 scholarships toward pursuit of their future academic goals. This scholarship program honors the legacy of LMCU founder Lloyd F. Hutt and his lifelong commitment to education and community involvement.
This year’s essay topic:
You have the entire country’s attention for one hour. What would you say?
Applicants are to write an original 750-1,500 word essay exploring the topic. Essays will be evaluated by a panel of independent judges, with the greatest emphasis placed on passion for the topic, creativity, clarity and originality.
Since 1991, the Lloyd F. Hutt Scholarship has provided over $311,000 in scholarship dollars to local high school seniors. In 2016, 538 essays were received for consideration, Entries came from 16 states; Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Missouri, Minnesota, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Georgia and Florida.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility requirements have changed for this year’s competition. Applicants no longer need to be LMCU members – the competition is open to all high school seniors.
All senior high school students are eligible for the program (except for LMCU employees, children of LMCU employees, directors or officers). All applicants must be high school seniors (includes home school students) and plan to enter a trade school, college or university in the next academic year. Recipients must submit evidence of acceptance and enrollment in an accredited trade school, college or university before payment will be made.

Awards will be paid to the recipient and educational institution in which the student is enrolled, to provide financial assistance in the pursuit of an undergraduate degree at an accredited trade school, college or university. The money may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment.
